In a stunning political twist, Elon Musk, the world's
richest man and once a key ally of Donald Trump, has launched a new political
movement called the America Party after a sharp fallout with the former
president over federal spending. Musk, who served as the head of the Department
of Government Efficiency under the Trump administration, fiercely opposed
Trump’s new domestic spending agenda—dubbed the One Big Beautiful Bill—claiming
it would add $3.4 trillion to the national deficit.
Musk, a major donor to Trump’s 2024 campaign, has now turned
against lawmakers who backed the bill, accusing them of pushing the country
into “debt slavery.” On X (formerly Twitter), Musk wrote, “Today, the
America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.” He posted a
poll on Independence Day asking Americans if they wanted independence from the
two-party system; over 1.2 million users responded, with a majority voting
“yes.”
Though the America Party is yet to be registered with the
Federal Election Commission (FEC), Musk promises it will focus on fiscal
conservatism and reduce government waste. He hinted the party will begin by
backing candidates in selected House and Senate races during next year’s
midterm elections.
Meanwhile, Trump has responded with threats, warning that
the federal government may reconsider its contracts with Musk’s companies,
including SpaceX and Tesla. He also criticized the Department of Government
Efficiency as a "monster that may go back and eat Elon."
As political tensions rise, Musk’s move signals a bold
attempt to reshape American politics, challenging the dominance of the
two-party system and reigniting debates about national spending,
accountability, and political independence.
